It’s that time of year again! Time to take out the decorations, bake cookies and get ready for Santa!

And we can not forget about the reindeer! While you’re making cookies for Santa or just making Christmas cookies (I highly recommend these Andes mint cookies) in general, try this fun reindeer chow snack mix to change things up this holiday season!

On top of that, it’s so easy to make that the kids can even help. They will love to think of magical reindeer flying overhead as they make this delicious Christmas snack mix!

It’s a delicious snack to enjoy during a small Christmas movie night (try watching while playing this Christmas movie bingo!) Or as a snack during a big Christmas game competition.

Or even to go out while playing one of these gift-swapping games – a great consolation prize for someone who just gets their beloved gift stolen from their hands.

You can even put it in a cute Christmas tin or pot and give it to neighbors with these cute Christmas treat labels!

Reindeer Chow Ingredients

Ingredient notes

  • Chocolate chips – you can use either chocolate chips or chocolate melting wafers, any one works! You only need to have melted chocolate to make the mixture.
  • Chex grain – you can use rice, maize or both. I do not recommend wheat, it is better in this homemade chex mixture.
  • Peanut butter cups – you want to use the mini peanut butter cups, either the wrapped or even the very small unwrapped work too!
  • M & Ms – I like the Christmas colored ones because it’s a Christmas snack mix, but you can really use any colored M & Ms you want if you can not get Christmas. Or just choose the red and green from an ordinary bag!
  • Cheerios – Honey Nut Cheerios are best for added sweetness, but if you like, you can also use regular Cheerios.

You can also mix it and add any of your other favorite snack ingredients – nuts, cornflakes, popcorn, etc. Just make sure you keep a good balance of sweet and salty!

How to Make Reindeer Chow

This recipe is one of my favorite Christmas recipes because it is just so easy and so quick to make. I love that my boys help me combine the ingredients and make this delicious reindeer chow.

Best of all – it’s not that big if they add a little too much or do not add enough, it’s a snack mix, so anything can!

Start by combining the Corn Chex, Rice Chex and Cheerios in a large bowl.

In a separate bowl, combine butter, chocolate chips and peanut butter then microwave for 30 seconds and stir.

When everything is not completely melted, microwave for another 30 seconds, stirring until completely melted and smooth.

You can also do this with a double boiler on the stove if you do not have a microwave (like me).

pour melted chocolate over cereal

Then pour the melted chocolate mixture over the grain and mix well, covering the grain evenly. This is the muddy mates part, except with a few minor tweaks.

Now combine the powdered sugar and cocoa in a large liter-sized ziplock bag.

Once they are both there, put all the chocolate-covered cereal in the bag and zip up.

Put the grain in the bag until it is all covered with the powdered sugar mixture. Chocolate muddy mates at their best!

Once all the grain is covered, pour it out onto a baking sheet to cool completely. You want the melted chocolate to harden and want the grain not to completely cover your hands when you pick it up.

To complete the chow, combine the M & Ms, mini peanut butter cups and pretzels in a large serving bowl.

Then add the cooled cereal mixture and stir gently to combine.

Pour everything into a large bowl and serve either in a large bowl or spoon into individual cups. Christmas cupcakes make wonderful cups for this kind of Christmas snack mix!

Expert tips

Make it for any holiday by changing the M&M colors within! Everything else works great for other holidays and the name can just be changed. Cupido chow, Easter bunny chow, you understand.

Mix lightly so you do not break all the peanut butter cups and pretzels. You want the mixture to be mixed but not broken up.

Recipe Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make it without peanut butter?

This snack mixture is definitely not nut friendly and there really is no good way to replace the peanut butter and peanut butter cups without changing the taste of the mixture completely. I would recommend doing something else, possibly rather chocolate-dipped rice crispy treats.

Can you freeze reindeer chow?

Freeze this reindeer chow in a freezer safe airtight bag or container for up to three months. Put it in the fridge overnight to thaw and enjoy it just like normal! You can even make individual bags of the snack mix so you don’t have to thaw it all at once.

How long does reindeer food last?

This reindeer chow will last up to a week when stored in an airtight container. Keep it even longer by freezing for up to three months.
